파르타 차테르지(Partha Chatterjee)컬럼비아 대학 인류학과 교수이자, ‘중동 및 아시아 언어와 문화’(Middle East and Asian Languages and Culture) 교수이다. 또한 콜카타에 있는 ‘사회과학 연구 센터’(Centre for Studies in Social Sciences)의 정치학과 교수이기도 하다. 그는 서발턴 연구회(Subaltern Studies Group)의 핵심 구성원으로서, 『민족주의 사상과 식민지 세계』(Nationalist Thought and the Colonial World, 1986), 『민족과 그 파편들』(The Nation and Its Fragments, 1993), 『가능한 인도』(A Possible India, 1997), 『서벵골의 현재 역사』(The Present History of West Bengal, 1997), 『위풍당당한 사기꾼?: 바왈 쿠마르의 이상하고 보편적인 역사』(A Princely Impostor?: The Strange and Universal History of the Kumar of Bhawal, 2002), 『피통치자의 정치: 대부분 세계에서의 대중 정치』(The Politics of the Governed: Popular Politics in Most of the World, 2004)를 비롯해 수많은 연구서를 썼다.
